I just got off the phone after talking to my little brother who really isn’t all that little anymore since today is his 25th birthday! Happy Birthday Darren!!!! I love you and can’t wait to see you in 12 days! YAY!!!
We’ve been pretty busy over the last week. Okay, it hasn’t felt really busy, but every time I’ve thought about blogging I decided that hanging out with Mum and Dad would be better.
On Thursday morning we lost Dad. Actually he wandered off. He didn’t wander far and just ended up down the beach where we found him helping some of the local people haul in a fishing net. Yes, he’s the white guy. I thought he was rather adventurous for it only being about 7:30 am.
Chris wasn’t feeling too great that morning so he stayed in bed I loaded Mum and Dad into the truck to go to St. Marc to do some errands. First stop was SD, the biggest grocery store in town that could actually get lost in your average 7-Eleven. After filling a basket with non-necessities we headed to the chicken place, bought a box of meat and then off to Barb’s so Mum and Dad could see her school and house.
When we arrived at the school we wandered through and said hello to each class. At recess they all gathered together to sing us some songs. By the third song I was welling up and on the verge of blubbering. I had been watching the kids faces and I realized that they were so HAPPY to be singing and that for those few moments they weren’t thinking about being hungry or what they would encounter when they went home. They were just happy to be singing.
That night Chris and Dad went to Chris’ Rotary meeting while Mum and I stayed home and hung up the psycho Christmas lights on the deck. I got them that morning and seemed to have missed the “5 WAY FLASHER” thing written on the box – in big, bold, GREEN letters. I got them all in place, then accidentally pulled too hard on one spot, loosening one of the wires and leaving half of a string out. Fixed that and now we have one section that doesn’t light, one section that stays on all the time and about 8 more that blink randomly. The one section that stays on has already saved us from going into seizures. Mum and I hung out listening to Christmas music and talking for the rest of the night in the ambience and the guys joined us when they got home.
On Friday morning Chris took his parents to Montrouis to show them around and to visit some other missionaries. I stayed home and did the month end accounting (woo hoo!) and took care of a few other things. That night was “Birthday Night”. Chris’ birthday was on Saturday but we already had a full day planned and there wasn’t room for birthday cake etc, so Friday it was. I cooked a really yummy dinner and Barb and our friend Leslie (yes, another one) came over for the night.
After dinner there was cake and presents-a new juicer and a kilt! I like the look with the shorts underneath. I told Chris that he should wear it for work one day and act like nothing is strange, just to see how our workers would react. If nothing else I would be entertained.
Then for the grand finale – FIREWORKS!! Mum, Dad and I found them on Thursday morning and couldn’t resist. Who could? We got six that were the size of soup cans for under $20 US! They were a surprise for Chris and he LOVED them. We weren’t sure what the neighborhood would do when they went off. They were like canons and there wasn’t a peep from anyone. When all was said and done we found the dog hiding in the kitchen – an off limits part of the house for Jabez. After some convincing that everything was okay, and an attempted dash for the bedroom (also off limits) she finally came outside again.
Saturday we went out on our old boat with the new owner and some of his friends. We went to a beach that Chris and I had found last fall. The sand is white and the water is clear. We enjoyed a picnic and a couple of hours of just hanging out.
We took Mum and Dad down to one of the resorts nearby for the night so they could see how the other half live. We enjoyed dinner with them and then returned yesterday for lunch to pick them up and take them to our missionary meeting. Last night I made a pre-Christmas dinner since we won’t be with them for the holidays. It was yummy if I do say so myself!
Today has just been a day of relaxing. Chris and Dad went into St. Marc to buy plywood for the depot roof and should be back any time now. Tomorrow morning we’re heading into Port for the night to visit some friends, go for dinner and do some shopping. Mum and Dad fly out on Wednesday morning and Chris and I will head back here.
Then it’s just 8 days until we’re on a plane ourselves!!!
