Skill Testing Question

Someone sent me one of those “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” puzzles yesterday. Thankfully I was. I thought I would do my own skill testing question contest here on the blog, just to spice things up a bit.

The “Rules” are simple:

1. You must submit your guess/answer as a comment.
2. All entries must be received NO LATER than 12 pm Haiti time (that’s 9 am Pacific) TOMORROW, February 1st, 2008.
3. The first comment received with the right answer wins.
4. You must include your name in the comment somehow so you can be identified.

The Grand Prize you ask?

Well, full out blog bragging rights of course!

Okay, now for the amazing skill testing question…

724 x 2 – 1253 x 2 -6

÷

128 = ?

Okay, get your guesses in! You don’t want to miss the big reveal tomorrow. It’s all about blogger craziness over here in Rolling Land! LOL!

Have fun and see you tomorrow!

About Leslie

I'm Leslie. Wife. Mother. Missionary. In the day to day my husband and I are responsible for running Clean Water for Haiti, a humanitarian mission that builds and distributes water filters to Haitian families. Living in Haiti full time provides lots of stories, and as I tell my husband, our grandkids probably won't believe most of them. Maybe writing them down will give me some credibility.

  1. (724 x 2) – (1253 x 2) – (6 / 128) = -1058.04688 724 times 2 = 14481253 times 2 = 25061448 minus 1253 = negative 10586 divided by 128 = .0468negative 1058 minus .0468 = negative 1058.0468Vicki

  2. Submitted by Barb J on behalf of Paul J. 724 x 2 – 1253 x 2 -6÷128 = ?The incorrect answer, obtained by just doing the operations in sequence is 3.However, the rule of order of operations states that multiplication and division take precedence over addition and subtraction, and a horizontal fraction line is considered a form of grouping, which means operations on either side of it are done separately.The problem with this formatting is that it leaves the intent vague. Because the division sign is on a separate line, this implies that it is to be interpreted as a horizontal fraction line. This would mean all the operations above the line are done first, which would produce -1064, then divided by 128, producing -8.3125.If that wasn’t the intent, then the order of operation rule applies to 6 divided by 128, and the answer is -1058.046875.Me, at this point I have no idea.Barb J :)
