Santa has already visited our house this year. Yep, we must have been his first stop. And he wasn’t dressed in a big red suit. In fact, “he” wasn’t a he at all, but rather a she wearing red Doc Martins with bells on the laces. No beard, no hat. But, despite the “not to standards” look of Santa, the gift delivered was probably the best our family could have received.
We are gushing joy to share that today the DHL delivery woman brought a nice bright yellow envelope that contained a citizenship card and certificate with Olivia’s name on it.
The fact that we are truly and finally done our adoption in all aspects is kind of mind boggling. I know most people think that when the adoption papers are signed and you have your kid(s) home you’re done. For us, because we live abroad, that citizenship was really when we knew we would reach the finish line. Our child could not travel on a Canadian passport without it. Not having it meant we would still need Olivia’s Haitian passport. Visas. Possible issues with Immigration. The list could go on.
Now we are done. She is not only our child, she is a child of Canada with all the rights, freedoms, responsibilities and privileges of being Canadian.
There really isn’t a better Christmas gift that our family could have received today. And, I’ll be honest. We were anticipating it arriving because Citizenship and Immigration had forwarded the tracking number, but we didn’t know if it would be today or Monday. Do you know how hard it is to sit on that kind of knowledge???? And now here we are! So happy we can share this with you and hoping that it brings you encouragement and joy to see God’s hand at work. We know many of you were praying – THANK YOU!
We hope that today and the next few days are filled with joy for all our readers, friends and family. I know this Christmas is already shaping up to be one of the best ever for us. We are filled with joy and excited to be spending this time celebrating the birth of Christ and everything that it means and brings here in Canada surrounded by family, snow and all things wonderful.
Merry Christmas from our little family to yours!
~Leslie, Chris and one of Canada’s newest citizens, Olivia.
