FAQ Series: Last Installment

Okay, today is reader question day, and since there’s only one question this should be easy!

Question: My question is what does Port au Prince look like these days? After the earthquake coverage I never saw another update on how it is going there, are there still smashed buildings everywhere? Are there still big tent cities. Would love an update on that!  ~Jan J.

Answer: Good question!

Port au Prince does have areas that are still very broken down, and other areas where rubble has been cleared. Just depends on where you are. Often the areas that still have buildings that are rubble are places where people haven’t wanted to, or haven’t got the money to invest in clearing the site and rebuilding it.

There are still big tent cities. Some are more lived in than others because of the aide that has been distributed there. In some cases food was distributed based on occupancy so people took up residence and had a tent, but later only lived there when food distributions where happening and have located elsewhere. For many others, their tent is all they have.
